What makes Savy Soaps and Salves all-natural?
Every ingredient we use in our soaps come from natural plant-based sources such as fruits,
vegetables, nuts, and herbs.
We do not use artificial dyes, synthetic fragrances, preservatives, or detergents in any of our soaps. There are a lot of handmade soapmakers out there that add brightly colored dyes and artificial fragrances to their soaps, but we believe soap is better without all of that. Instead, we use high quality essential oils to scent our soaps, and occasionally add herbs, spices, and coffee to give the soaps their natural colors. (Remember - EVERYTHING we use to make our soaps is listed on the label. Even if it is no longer in it's original form, such as sodium hydroxide.)
So why is "all-natural" better? Our skin is the largest organ of our body, and it absorbs everything we put on it. So if you're using products loaded with synthetic ingredients, like dyes, preservatives and chemical fragrances, that's not very good news at all! Natural products work with our skin, helping to keep it beautiful, healthy, and functioning at its best.

_____What's the difference between essential oils and fragrance oils?
_Essential oils are the concentrated extracts of different parts of a plant like the flowers, bark, roots, seeds, stem, needles, berries and leaves. They are pure, natural, therapeutic, and wonderful smelling botanical oils. To make essential oils, large quantities of the fragrant plant material (such as lavender or peppermint) are pressed or steam distilled to extract their natural oils. Other than having a wonderful scent, they also carry the wonderful skin care properties of the plants themselves. Essential oils give a soft, beautiful scent to our soaps that are also uplifting, and calming. To learn more about the natural essential oils and their properties used in our soaps, read about our ingredients.
Fragrance oils are synthetically produced aroma compounds which contain many chemicals. There are many different scents available but they do not have any type of skin care benefits. They contain many toxins that can dry out and cause irritation to sensitive skin and noses. Fragrance oils contain many different chemicals that have been linked to harmful health effects, are carcinogenic and toxic, and can eventually damage our organs and brain, even with very low levels of use. Our bodies cannot effectively eliminate these toxins. For this reason, we do not use them in any of our soaps.

How is all-natural handmade soap different from Commercially produced soaps soap?
_
_It’s all in the ingredients! Our all- natural handmade soaps
are made from edible vegetable oils that moisturize, nourish and protect your
skin. They are extremely rich in naturally occurring glycerin, a natural skin-softening moisturizer that is created during the soapmaking process. Our handmade soaps are in their most natural and true state and are extremely gentle. They have a rich creamy lather, and gently clean and add moisture to your skin without drying it out. After you've used natural handmade soap, you’ll never want to use anything else! So go ahead and give it a try, your skin will not regret it!
Commercially produced soaps are usually made from tallow (animal fat) and other low-cost oils that do not offer the same skin care benefits as the oils used in our handmade soaps. They remove the natural glycerin from their soaps so that it can be sold separately to be used in other products like lotions, etc. Commercial soap companies also rely greatly on sodium laurel sulfate, which is a synthetic detergent which is highly irritating and dangerous - to make their "soaps" lather and clean. The result from this, is a harsh bar of detergent that strips your skin of all it's moisture and leaves it feeling and looking tight and dry. That's NOT what soap is supposed to do!

A little bit of information about sodium hydroxide, a.k.a lye:
_There are many
people that question the use of sodium hydroxide in handmade soap. The fact is that all
soap is made with lye. What needs to be made clear is that once the
saponification process has been completed, the lye and oil molecules
have combined and chemically changed into soap and glycerin. When soap has been made correctly, there is no lye
remaining in the final bars of soap. Lye must be used to make soap, however,
there should never be any remaining lye in the final product as to hurt the
skin.
_____Can I use handmade soap if I have sensitive skin?
_Absolutely! Savy Soaps and Salves handmade soap is a
wonderful choice especially for sensitive or easily irritated skin. They are
naturally very gentle and do not contain any of the chemical additives that
are often responsible for skin irritation. Everyone’s skin is
different, so if you have extremely sensitive skin, try one of our soaps
that are especially recommended for your skin type.

Are Savy Soaps and Salves allergy-free?
We test all
of our products on ourselves, family members, and friends who are
happy and willing. Although our products are made with all-natural ingredients, there are many people who are allergic to natural ingredients such
as certain plants, nuts, and oils. An ingredient that is very mild and
soothing for one person can be an allergen to another. Each product description on our website includes a complete list of ingredients, as do our labels. People who have food allergies are not necessarily allergic to the same items in skin care products. If for any reason you are unsure, please do an "allergy patch test." Always remember to read through all the ingredients listed and use our products at your own discretion.
_About how long will a bar of soap last?
_Well, that depends. A large sized bar of our handmade soap could
last anywhere from a few days, (if you have young children who love to lather and play with it, without letting it dry between uses), to several weeks, or even several months, depending on use and care. Because there is a lot of natural glycerin in handmade soap, and because
there's no synthetic chemicals to act as hardening agents, handmade soap
is usually a little softer than commercially produced soap, but with proper care
it can last much longer than one of those bars of (detergent). Whether you use it in the bathtub, shower, near your bathroom or kitchen sink, be sure to keep it out of sitting water and preferably on a soap dish where it
can dry in between uses to prolong its use. Try one of these wooden soap dishes (that my wonderful husband makes), which are specially designed to make your handmade soaps last longer.
